UNIT 1 OBJECTIVES: To be able to
- Define grammar according to G&Q (1990) and to compare their definition with other grammarian's definitions (Eastman's, Crystal's, etc.)
- Present, describe and compare the different types of grammars.
- Be aware of and find out the similarities and differences between a descriptive and prescriptive grammar and grammar course
- Review a grammar book, grammar course and electronic grammar and discuss the extent to which it can be regarded as a prescriptive or descriptive grammar.
- Report and characterise the main periods of the history of grammars.
- Get familiar and be able to present a choice of pedagogical grammars, descriptive grammars, on-line grammars, grammar web sites, descriptive grammar-related web sites, etc.
- To get to know the objectives and scopes of different Descriptive Grammar Courses.
- Consult, select and be able to present a choice of DGI bibliography: compulsory coursebooks, grammar dictionaries and grammar and language encyclopaedias.
- Get familiar with some grammarians: Quirk, Greenbaum, Crystal, Downing and Locke, Muñoz...

- Consult the DG1 Bibliography Web Site to find books relevant for DG1 course and to analyse the table of contents and reviews of some of the descriptive grammars selected.
- Consult Naves' selection of On-line Grammars Web Site to get familiar with a choice of electronic grammars and to discuss the extent to which they can be best described as either descriptive or prescriptive grammars.
- Examine the DG1 syllabus from the "Guia de l'Estudiant" to find out what the course is about, the contents and requirements.
- Examine the links to Descriptive Grammar Courses to find out the characteristics of the courses, the contents, the objectives, etc.
- Find out what DG1 is about and Check your previous knowledge in About grammar by Naves
UNIT 1 ASSIGNMENTS:
- Assignment 1a on "Standard English"
- Read Greenbaum &Quirk (1990) "The English Language" pp1-10 paying special attention to 'varieties of English' (pp 4-5) and to 'Standard English...' (pp6-9)
- Find examples of 'non-standard English' from authentic aural and written texts (lyrics from songs, newspapers and magazine articles, novels, advertisements, etc.) Quote them properly and provide the source.
- Send your contributions to the DG1 Forum in the Electronic Dossier
- Assignment 1b on "Descriptive and Prescriptive Grammars"
- Read
- Naves&Celaya (1999) 'INPUT 4: Prescriptive and Descriptive Grammars" (pp 11-14) and
