Abstract

The so-called 'Master Argument' of Diodorus Cronu apparently established some form of 'logical' determinism and since at least Benson Mates and Arthur Prior, it has attracted significant philosophical attention but remains obscure and contentious. In this paper, I clarify Diodorus' Master Argument and modal notions and examine some responses, arguing that one in particular is more successful than has been appreciated or might be immediately apparent.
